Don’t Mess With Former CA Insurance Commissioner Chuck Quackenbush
The former California Insurance Commissioner Chuck Quackenbush (who is now a Lee County, Fla. deputy sheriff) shot a man this past Tuesday.  The following description of the incident is from an article in the Los Angeles Times:

“Quackenbush was trying to handcuff Teodor Buda, 57, Tuesday afternoon when a scuffle ensued, said Tony Schall, spokesman for the Lee County Sheriff's Department. When Buda, who was suspected of battery and domestic violence, wrestled away Quackenbush's Taser and pointed it at him, Quackenbush shot Buda in the abdomen, Schall said.”chuck_quackenbush.jpg

I had no idea that Quackenbush was now a deputy sheriff, that’s quite a cut in pay.  I guess down in Lee County Florida being a previous insurance commissioner who resigned because of corruption accusations (that turned out to be correct) makes no mind to them.

In case you have not heard about the specifics of the corruption investigation surrounding him here is a brief explanation from the LA Times article.

“He admitted in legislative hearings that his department reached secret settlements with insurance companies that allowed them to avoid penalties for mishandling Northridge earthquake claims by paying into foundations Quackenbush created.”

Would you be ok with Quackenbush being a deputy sheriff in your city knowing what he admitted to?

The use of his sidearm may well have been justified in this situation - I guess that is for Lee County to decide - but I still wonder how someone with a background like Chuck's (in an important gig such as Insurance Commissioner) makes the cut for a job in law enforcement! No, I would not be comfortable with it in my community, and I think it should lead to some serious review of the hiring practices in Lee County. The guy should be able to get a job someplace, sure... but not in this field.

Oh, get serious. He was found guilty of what charge? He served what time in jail? He paid what fine? No? Nothing? Gee, maybe he WAS actually run out of office by a witch hunt after all. Go figure. Do you really think that Lee County didn't background check him? You and your sanctimonious crap. It's never been about the pay for Chuck. If I recall, between him and his wife, they did quite well during the early days of the Silicon Valley. Face it, Chuck is a hero in the classic definition of the word. When the chips were down, he did his duty in the highest traditions of law enforcement.
I'd call him for backup.
