Today is the official “Blog Action Day” across the ever-expanding blogosphere. Organizations, companies and thousands of bloggers are coming together to blog on one important issue, the environment. Considering that the world we inhabit and the air we breathe are all critical to our survival I’d say this is quite a pertinent topic.
The founders and minds behind Blog Action Day have asked bloggers to write about the environment as it relates to their topic. Insurance has many ties to the environment, least of which are insurance analysts trying to predict future weather patterns for particular types of insurance products.
For beginners, hundreds of insurers are required by law to produce detailed and lengthy prospectuses on an annual basis for certain products, namely variable annuities and insurance. Additionally insurers print up massive quantities of marketing materials for direct mail campaigns, agents and clients. This torrent of paper demand is not helping us grow more trees or reduce the need for cutting down trees.
I recently learned of an environmental photographer, Chris Jordan, who aims his lens at the wastefulness of our culture by snapping photos of aluminum cans, crushed cars, cell phones, circuit boards and other discarded products. With this countries' need to constantly consume products and quickly “dispose” of unwanted byproducts we’ve created a looming environmental disaster.
While I’m sure none of this comes as a shock to you I was amazed at the sheer amount of waste that has become so prevalent in our society. The magnitude is difficult for me to comprehend and admittedly I’m part of the problem. While I recycle aluminum cans and glass and plastic containers I continue to not recycle paper, plastic food wrappers and many other byproducts of my daily consumption.
Looking through the Blog Action Day website I found a few online resources for changing the way we consume and seeking out environmentally feasible options. Visit the blog Treehugger for daily environmental doses, Green TV for visual options and We Can Live Green for information about products that are environmentally friendly.
