What a player Greg Oden was during the NCAA tournament this year. Hearing that he has an injury and has to undergo microfracture surgery that'll keep him out of this season was tough news for many people. However, Oden is a lucky man because he signed a multi-million dollar guaranteed contract with the Portland Trailblazers, the best insurance he could have.
Do you think he should have stayed at Ohio State for another year? If he was still enrolled in college he'd be looking at a rough future of surgeries, rehab and not guarantee of an NBA career and financial security. Of course hindsight is an SOB but nonetheless.
According to John Canzano of The Oregonian Oden's bad news isn't all that important or "devastating" in the larger scheme of things. When you put it in those terms then of course an injury to a young millionaire isn't much of a tearjerker.
I for one hope he is able to play the game he loves and we can watch him dunk on and shoot over many players in the ensuing years.

Having grown up in Oregon, I have followed Oden's trek to the Blazers, and I think that his surgery is a greater emotional crush on the City of Portland, where pro basketball is the Only Game In Town. If Oden were unable to continue in hoop, he could switch to dentistry (in which he has expressed interest!), and his gold-plated insurance a.k.a. (his contract) would MORE than cover his tuition payments! However, I think that it is more likely that he will recover well and lead the Blazers into becoming a force again. At least, the fan in me can hope so...
