Apple iPhone Insurance Revisited: Apple Warranty Only Option

I've noticed a recent resurgence in interest on the topic of iPhone insurance.  Seems that now more people have an iPhone - I'm sure in no small part due to the several hundred-dollar price slash - there is an accompanying desire to protect their investment.

I wrote about iPhone insurance several months ago and commented on the fact that there was no available insurance at the time.  Appears that the situation hasn't changed in the interim.  According to the AT&T website in the iPhone FAQ section:

"Q. Is iPhone eligible for Wireless Phone Insurance?
A. No. iPhone is ineligible for the Wireless Phone Insurance program
offered to AT&T customers. iPhone is covered by the Apple Warranty. If you have Wireless Phone Insurance from AT&T, it will be removed from your line of service."

What does the Apple Warranty offer you ask?  Straight from the Apple website I've found the answer:

"Every iPhone comes with one year of hardware repair coverage and up to two years of technical support."

If you want to extend your hardware coverage to two years you can purchase an AppleCare plan for $69.  However this plan is not insurance as is stipulated in the Terms and Conditions for the AppleCare plan:

"The Plan does not cover:

Damage to the Covered Equipment caused by accident, abuse, neglect, misuse...

Covered Equipment that has been lost or stolen."

Any ideas on why AT&T or Apple doesn't currently offer wireless phone insurance for the snazzy new iPhone?  I guess the cost of replacing thousands of lost, stolen or damaged iPhones would be too big a dent in the wallets of AT&T and Apple.

One would think that there would be someone capitalizing on this, but the fact is that there isn't. We actually planned to roll out a service with an insurance underwriter client, but paused, assuming Apple or AT&T would eventually do it. Wrong, so far. If it goes another month or two, I think some companies will go for it.

I paid $37.00 for the year to insure my iPhone with State Farm Insurance. Not only does this cover my iPhone, but it also covers my video camera and digital camera. The policy is called "personal electronics coverage." You do not need to have any other policies with State Farm to purchase this policy and there is no deductible in the event of loss.

Excellent! Jake answered the immediate question which this posting leads me to ask... personal electronics coverage SHOULD cover such things, and does it cheaper (and better!). However, with that said, I am really turned off with the way that Apple is treating consumers lately. I'm glad that customers can turn to a third party for insurance coverage of these items, and turn a deaf ear to the corporate warranties.

» 5 Most Commented Insurance Posts Of 2007 from TheInsurancePolicy
In the year 2007 I posted several hundred times on this blog while covering a wide array of topics.  With the start of the New Year I though I’d take a look back at some of the more popular posts... [Read More]

We already know the advantage and the disadvantage of using the iphone with the same features and other that would bring us the convenience we all know that the trend sale of such gadgets is to have us the convenience and others but how about our budget isn’t they also convenient in our pocket we never know.
The research firm NPD Group recently, in an Engadget report, stated that the iPhone 3G has overtaken the lead in cellular phone sales, dropping the Motorola RAZR out of the top slot for the first time in almost 10 years. The shift would indicate that American consumers are looking for a phone that offers more features than just a handset for making phone calls. The recent massive advertising campaign hasn’t hurt Apple either, even if cell phone sales have actually dropped 15 percent since Christmas 2007. Apple still has to be happy with their position as the trendsetter in gadget style and taste. Eventually, America’s cell phone choices will seem far more full featured than what the Asian market already has access to. However, when it comes to short-term payday cash loans, America’s choices are broad. The economic crunch that is on combined with the looming Christmas season will force some people will to look for a little help between paydays. If taken with care and responsibility, payday cash can be a useful tool, like an iPhone.
