Massachusetts Reaches Out To 19-26 Year Olds With Health Insurance Coverage
The Massachusetts health-care law making health insurance mandatory “officially took effect” July 1 according to Businessweek.com.  Residents now have until the end of the year to purchase health insurance or they’ll lose a “$219 personal exemption when filing state taxes next year.”

In the midst of this new law the Commonwealth Health Insurance Connector, “the state agency overseeing the law, worked with private insurers to come up with young adult plans with monthly premiums as low as $106” all the way up “to $220 per month.”  However, as is common with young adults, making them see why they need health insurance in another challenge altogether.

Even $106 per month is a lot for a person just a few years out of college.  Unless of course our country had universal health care, then every child, retiree and everyone in between wouldn’t have to worry about receiving health care in case of an emergency or other need.

Interestingly some of the plans being offered have annual maximum benefits of as low as $50,000.  Perhaps some of the other plans for young adults offer higher maximum benefits but nonetheless the policies with around $50,000 just aren’t going to cut it for a catastrophic event.  My guess is that the likelihood of a person between 19 and 26 years young partaking in riskier behavior is higher than older people doing the same.
