Mississippi Gubernatorial Candidate John Eaves Not Interested In Insurance Donations
All Mississippi residents should keep a close eye on John Arthur Eaves as he attempts to make his way towards the Governor’s office.  According to an article on Wlox.com “Gubernatorial candidate John Arthur Eaves says his campaign will refuse any contribution from the insurance industry.”

How is he going to make this promise a reality you ask?  Well by signing a pledge card of course.

“To back up that promise, the democrat running for governor signed a pledge card he set up in front of Biloxi's Katrina memorial Thursday.  Eaves also challenged Governor Barbour to return any insurance industry contributions he's received.”

I guess all Mississippi voters should just take him at his word unless he’s going to announce all the donations he’s receiving.  If he is in fact not going to take donations from the insurance industry then more power to him.  However, there wouldn’t be a problem with candidates receiving money from certain industries if they didn’t then make decision based upon who donated to their candidacy.  But I guess that’s a crazy thought.

Um, that's what financial disclosure forms are for. Required by the state. Every month.

Mississippian,

Thanks for the comment. I'd be very interested to know where I can find John Arthur Eaves monthly financial disclosure forms online. I hope you can provide this information for all interested parties. Thanks.

Try www.sos.state.ms.us and click on Elections/Campaign Finance/ 2007 Campaign Finance Reports.

Unfortunately, its in PDF format of scanned in reports (and not easy to read) but the employer and occupation of every contributor is there.

Anon,

Thanks for the link. Here is the exact path to locate the documents:

www.sos.state.ms.us - Elections / Campaign Finance / Campaign Finance Reports / View reports by candidate's first and last name.

Then type in "John Eaves" into the boxes, hit Go and his name will pop up. Click on the link "View Campaign Images". You then have the option to download a PDF file.

Interestingly most of the contributions are from Eaves very own law firm. The rest are some electrical union donations and other law firms or self-employed people. So far he's keeping his promise. Thanks again for the link.

Interesting concept to designate the insurance industry as the industry not receive money from. I do think an assessment of where all money is derived would be helpful because where it comes from is where the loyalty will lead.

Was surfing the web and just found your post! Our latest TV spot on who we're not taking money from available here, and our last release on finance numbers, from 07-31-07:

BARBOUR CAMPAIGN FLOODED BY OUT-OF-STATE MONEY
Eaves Promises to Spend “Whatever it takes to win.”

JACKSON – Unlike other races on this year’s ballot, money raised by candidates in the Governor’s race has no relation to their ability to compete financially. That’s because Democratic candidate John Eaves has pledged to spend out of his own pocket in order to show his loyalty will remain with the people of Mississippi.

“I’m going to give this race whatever it takes to win, because it’s time for a new day in Mississippi,” said Eaves. “I may spend more than Barbour, I may spend less, but I won’t take any money from big oil, big tobacco, or big insurance. I simply cannot allow these out-of-state moneychangers to buy another election in Mississippi. As Governor, my loyalty will be with my Creator and the hardworking, God-fearing people of Mississippi.”

Governor Haley Barbour’s previous campaign finance report showed that nearly half of all money raised that period came from outside of Mississippi.

“What do these out-of-state people want from Mississippi, and what is Barbour giving them in return?” asked Sharon Garrison, spokeswoman for Eaves. “We know Barbour took thousands of dollars from big tobacco and then vetoed an increase in the cigarette tax that would have cut our grocery tax in half. He took thousands of dollars from big insurance yet 80,000 people still live in toxic FEMA trailers. John Eaves will throw the moneychangers out of the Governor’s mansion because it’s time for a new day in Mississippi.”

A financial report filed today by the Eaves campaign with the Mississippi Secretary of State’s office showed they spent $415,259.00 on TV and radio this period.

“Our campaign is fully staffed,” continued Garrison. “We’re on TV and radio with positive spots that focus on John’s family and vision for a new day in Mississippi. John has committed to spend whatever it takes to win, without taking any contributions from the moneychangers of big oil, big tobacco, and big insurance.”
