The demographics of the United States are slowly changing as baby boomers creep closer to retirement. Many communities might not be prepared to properly handle the amount of aging people and their specific needs. In light of this reality the MetLife Foundation put together a report outlining a blueprint for communities entitled “A Blueprint for Action: Developing a Livable Community for All Ages” according to National Underwriter.
The report brings up the issues of housing, planning and zoning, transportation, health and supportive services, culture and lifelong learning, public safety and civic engagement and volunteer opportunities. Instead of just focusing on the problems or obstacles the report actually gives a six-step plan “for focusing community energies on aging in place.”
Considering there are currently 35 million people age 65 or older in the United States and within 25 years that number will double this report is a great start for communities to prepare.
