AHIP has recently begun a disability educational campaign that includes “releasing a policy brief and a survey report addressing disability issues.” In addition they’ve created a website dedicated to providing disability related information at yourincomeatrisk.org.
One of the ways insurers are dealing with employees who’ve become disabled on the job is to invest in return-to-work programs. The benefits are obvious as employers can benefit from not loosing their experienced workers and so that employees can go back to work.
According to the article “In 2005, private disability insurers spent an average of $3,200 on each disabled employee receiving rehabilitation and return-to-work services.”

It is also important to distinguish between short-term and long-term disability insurance programs. For example, a local hospital here in Maine offers long-term to employees automatically, but they must opt into (and pay for) the short-term insurance. It can take a while before the long-term plans kick in, so people need to know how they will survive in the interim! These insurance programs can lead to an important measure of peace of mind should the unfortunate occur...
