State Farm Insurance is using this website as a way to humorously educate consumers about renters and auto insurance. If a baseball comes flying through your car window or your apartment is flooded: Now What? You get the basic premise of the site.
From the first page you can choose two main links to learn more about haw to save on auto insurance or about renters insurance. The auto insurance page is very informative, especially if you need a brush up on the basics of auto insurance or you’re new to the whole scene. Just click on the link “What coverage should I consider” to learn more about Liability, Collision, Car Rental Coverage, Comprehensive and other options available to you when you buy auto insurance.
There are also two other links “What affects my premium” and “What do I do after an accident?” Both of these links give a decent amount of information that will help you understand how your premium is calculated and the important steps to take after being in an accident. Knowing what to do after an accident is important so here are the State Farm recommended steps:
Call Police: Even if you think the accident is minor, it’s always a good idea to have them involved. (It depends on the situation. If you and the other driver agree that the damage is minimal or that there is no damage then why involve the police? What do you think?)
Get Names: Obviously you want to get the name, address and number of the other driver involved, but you should also try to see if there are any witnesses around who might have seen the accident and get their name and number, as well. It can help shed light on any disputes that may come up later. (If you’re going to be in an accident hope and pray that not only were there witnesses but that the witnesses are willing to give you their information. I was in an accident that was 100% the other person’s fault and luckily several people were willing to give their information to the police. The witnesses are the ones that enabled me to get money for my totaled car.)
Take Notes: Make note of damage to all cars involved, as well as road and weather conditions. (If you have a camera take as many pictures as necessary to document all the damage.)
Don’t Sign Anything: Unless it’s a report that has been prepared by the investigating officer, never sign any document given to you at the scene of the accident.
Contact Your Agent: Notify your State Farm® agent about the accident as soon as you can to file your claim. (Make sure you’ve got all the contact and insurance information from the other person before filing a claim.)
I’ll post again about the renters insurance portion of the NowWhat.com site.
