Texas Gov. Rick Perry has proposed a plan that would assist many low-income families in paying for health care. His plan would give out $150 a month per person to go towards paying insurance premiums. In order to fund the plan $625 million a year would need to be allocated.
The interesting part is that Perry has put forward the idea of selling the state lottery and then setting up a $2.7billion endowment that would throw off $250 million annually in interest. Money that is currently funneling into hospitals “to help cover the cost of caring for the uninsured” would be used to pay for the difference.
In order for families to be eligible for the plan they would have to make “less than twice the federal poverty limit – or about $40,000 for a family of four.” My question is who is interested in buying the Texas state lottery? I had no idea a state could sell their own lottery.
