My Safe Florida Home Program Pilot Phase Ends With Success
The pilot phase of a program called the My Safe Florida Home ended this week with the goal of 12,000 home inspections being reached.  According to nationalunderwriter.com Tom Gallagher, Florida’s chief financial officer, made an announcement that “his goal of completing 12,000 inspections by the Nov. 30 end of the hurricane season was met and exceeded by nearly 1,000 inspections.”

Around 560 inspectors and 800 contractors have been specifically trained for the program during the pilot phase.  This program was “created to protect Floridians by strengthening their homes against hurricanes and to reduce the state’s
home_house_inspection.jpg exposure to hurricane damage.”  The home inspections include the following services:

  • The current rating of their homes against hurricane damage on a 0-100 scale.
  • Up to seven ways they can improve the strength of their homes against hurricanes.
  • The estimated costs to make recommended improvements.
  • What their potential insurance premium savings could be if they were to make those improvements.

Homeowners that receive an inspection can “qualify for matching grants of up to $5,000 to fortify their homes” which “will be prioritized and awarded to homeowners who live in high-risk, hurricane-vulnerable areas of the state.”

In order to qualify for a home inspection homeowners “must live in a single-family, site-built home with an insured value of $500,000 or less and have a valid homestead exemption, the department said.”

This program is much needed for those living in hurricane prone areas.  If you have participated in the program or know someone that has let us know if the inspection proved helpful.

This is really important. It's not just about insurers having to be better at settling hurricane and storm-related claims; it's also about homeowners being better prepared for hurricane season. After all, hurricanes are a fact of life for Floridians. Here's hoping that as many people as possible take advantage of this smart program.

I wonder how many people refused to have their homes inspected, thinking that the damage would never happen to them. That would be an interesting statistic to know.

I agree with you Monique. Living in Florida must be a constant struggle with preparing for and keeping abreast of potential hurricanes. Living in an earthquake prone region, Southern California, one is more aware of taking precautions and planning as best you can.

My guess about the program would be that there is a bigger demand than the state can actually provide . Speaking for myself if a program like the one in Florida were offered to me I'm fairly certain I would take them up on their offer.

Thanks for the comments and keeping em coming.

I have written several posts about the progress of the My Safe Florida Home program here and here.  This program enables homeowners to have a free home inspection by the state and then they can apply for matching funds, up... [Read More]

One of the best ways to have a strengthened home is to build with stronger materials - this would seem obvious, but it's both true and underutilized! For example, steel framed homes lead to far more durability in hurricane force winds than wood, and yet they are a relative rarity, even with the possibility of insurance rate breaks. I am seriously considering steel for my next home. They look the same as wood on the outside, and are much stronger.
