How Do Life Insurance Benefits Effect Children?
Parents often buy life insurance to provide benefits to their children if the parents were to die prematurely. This reason is one of the biggest behind life insurance purchases and is critical for protecting family’s responsibilities. An article on forbes.com written by attorneys from nolo.com, a source for do-it-yourself legal solutions for consumers and small businesses, addresses the important issue of life insurance and how it effects beneficiaries especially children. The key points addressed by the article are “whether or not you really need life insurance, what type of policy is best and who should manage the proceeds on behalf of your children.”life_insurance_cute_kid.jpg The type of life insurance recommended by the article is not too surprisingly term insurance. The article states, “you should avoid expensive cash value life insurance (whole life, universal life, variable life) policies that offer a lump sum payment after a certain period of time (20 or 30 years, for example) or after you reach a certain age (often 65).” Basically everyone should avoid Ford, Chevy and Honda and only buy Toyota because one size fits all. Remember that different types of life insurance exist for different types of situations. Universal life is a very different product than variable life and it is dangerous to lump them together. A licensed insurance professional that is not trying to push a product on you will properly explain the difference between insurance products and give recommendations based on your specific situation. A lawyer didn’t study, take and pass the insurance exam and then go through in house training and ongoing continuing education. The rest of the article is worth reading as it touches upon topics an Estate Planning lawyer should know best about. I recommend you read the article for yourself and let us know what you think.

You have to have an exceptionally unbiased insurance agent if you are going to get the real comparison of insurance products, especially when the commissions vary across products. The agent would potentially have to act without regard to the commission they receive in order to really match a product to a customer's situation.

Monique,

Yes that is the ideal situation I am speaking of in my post. I was an insurance agent and know the large differences between the commission on a term policy and VUL, UL, WL or EIUL. A term policy commission is generally going to be significantly smaller than the other permanent policies.

There will always be insurance agents that have become agents to make the big commissions regardless of what is suitable for the client and don't intend on staying in the industry that long. Then there are the agents that either have been in the industry for many years, intend on making a career out of the insurance industry or are not looking to make money off of clients over keeping the product suitable.

Aside from greed one of the main reasons so many insurance agents sell unsuitable products to clients is because of the structure of the industry. Most agencies only pay commission or a few months of salary until the agent starts making more in commission. If the agent doesn't make enough in commission then they are let go of. There is a lot of pressure on most agents to sell a certain amount of policies in a month or they can't feed their family.

Not all companies are structured in that way but enough are to create a bad reputation for insurance agents. My overall point to consumers is that they do some of their own research, ask questions and demand answers. Don't walk into a meeting with an insurance agent knowing nothing about your options.

Thanks for your comment.

This leads me to a giggle, it's actually rather funny. The attorney is just that - an attorney - which doesn't qualify him/her as an insurance agent any more than it qualifies him/her to perform oral surgery. All this individual can do is provide legal advice. I would leave the breakdown of insurance benefits to a qualified expert in the field, no?
