The site offers up some sobering statistics regarding your chances of disability:
- According to the United States Census Bureau, 49.7 million Americans were classified as disabled in 2000 Census. "Census 2000 Brief," U.S. Bureau of the Census, March 2003
- Three out of every 10 workers will experience an accident or illness that keeps them out of work for three months or longer. "Disability Insurance: A Missing Piece in the Financial Security Puzzle," America's Health Insurance Plans, page 7, 2004
- Disability is the leading cause of personal bankruptcies. It causes nearly 50% of all mortgage foreclosures, compared to 2% caused by death. Health Affairs, The Policy Journal of the Health Sphere, 2 February 2005
The site also has sections on real life stories of people who became disabled, preparing for disability, reducing your chances and a resources page. There is also a section for an income/expense review that enables you to input your information for a detailed review of your current financial situation.
I strongly encourage everyone to visit the website and learn more about disability and how it could affect your family and the ways to be properly prepared. I can’t stress enough that all families at a minimum need a written budget, three to six months of income for emergencies and to pay off all credit card debts.
