Council For Disability Awareness Launches Consumer Website
If you have ever worried about becoming disabled or thought about purchasing disability insurance then the new website from the Council for Disability Awareness (CDA) might come in handy.  The website, www.disabilitycanhappen.org, is focused on educating consumers about everything disability related.

The site offers up some sobering statistics regarding your chances of disability:

  • According to the United States Census Bureau, 49.7 million Americans were classified as disabled in 2000 Census.  "Census 2000 Brief," U.S. Bureau of the Census, March 2003
  • Three out of every 10 workers will experience an accident or illness that keeps them out of work for three months or longer.  "Disability Insurance: A Missing Piece in the Financial Security Puzzle," America's Health Insurance Plans, page 7, 2004
  • Disability is the leading cause of personal bankruptcies. It causes nearly 50% of all mortgage foreclosures, compared to 2% caused by death.  Health Affairs, The Policy Journal of the Health Sphere, 2 February 2005

The site also has sections on real life stories of people who became disabled, preparing for disability, reducing your chances and a resources page.  There is also a section for an income/expense review that enables you to input your information for a detailed review of your current financial situation.

I strongly encourage everyone to visit the website and learn more about disability and how it could affect your family and the ways to be properly prepared.  I can’t stress enough that all families at a minimum need a written budget, three to six months of income for emergencies and to pay off all credit card debts.
