BlackBerry Use Triggers Worker Compensation Insurance Worries
Has incessant BlackBerry use now crept into the world of workers’ comp insurers and risk managers?  According to a blog post, BlackBerry Anonymous, on A View From The Press Box by Sam Friedman “there is a repetitive stress factor at work here that could impact workers' comp insurers and risk managers.”

Apparently kids are getting hooked to text messaging at an early age with their cell phones that could lead to frequent adult BlackBerry use and a future proliferation of workers’ comp claims.

There are already “names for the various ‘conditions’ brought on byblackberry_use.jpg excessive use—such as ‘BlackBerry Thumb’ or, even catchier, ‘Trigger Finger’ (referring to difficulty in flexing an overtaxed digit, prompted by inflammation and swelling of the tendons).”  If you have the following symptoms you could be suffering from one of the aforementioned conditions:

The symptoms include pain, loss of flexibility and grip weakness. The treatment can run from simple rest to splints, drugs and even surgery in the worst cases.

Those afflicted with BlackBerry conditions could find themselves “wearing out their tendons earlier and earlier in life, and arthritis will set in – eventually crippling them” according to Friedman.  Hold on a second here.  In order to cripple yourself from using a BlackBerry you would have to be typing for hours a day every day a week.  Are people really using their BlackBerries that much?

Let us know your experience and whether you have seen others using Blackberries so much that they are having physical pain in their fingers.  I am having a hard time comprehending the amount of dedication it would take a person to incur a BlackBerry condition.
