Amerigorup is a 12-year old company that specializes in health care for low-income patients and had revenue in 2005 of $2.3 billion. According to state prosecutors and a whistleblower “while marketing its services in Illinois, Amerigroup avoided pregnant women and others likely to run up high doctor bills.”
The attorneys said this conduct “cheated the government, which was subsidizing the company to market its services evenly among all low-income patients regardless of whether they were pregnant or had costly illnesses.” I would say Amerigroup gets high marks for being cheap and downright immoral. Let’s avoid pregnant women and see if we can get away with it. What were they thinking?
