Secondhand Smoke Wreaked $6 Billion Of Harm To U.S. Nonsmokers In 2004
Have you ever been forced to sit near a smoker or smelled smoke drifting around you?  One of my biggest pet peeves is inhaling smoke from a smoker.  According to an article on nationalunderwriter.com a researcher at the American Academy of Actuaries has calculated that “tobacco smoke caused about $6 billion in harm to U.S. nonsmokers in 2004.”

The researcher, Cori Uccello, a senior helath fellow at the AAA, came up with the figure in response to a report by the U.S. surgeon general.  The surgeon general backed the “belief that secondhand smoke causes lung cancer and heart disease.”

Uccello came up with the $6 billion amount “by adding up the cost of medical care for nonsmokers who suffer from coronary heart disease or lung cancer and have spent long periods of time around secondhand smoke.”  He also “included economic losses due to lost wages and benefits from the disability or premature death of nonsmokers.”

Call to all smokers:  If you are going to smoke keep your smoke to yourself and stay away from any other nonsmoking human beings!  Thanks smokers for not taking us all down with you.

I don't believe it. You are using statistics to back up an argument when other conclusions may be just as valid. Your personal views color you conclusions.

George I never vouched for the statistics. I simply quoted what was from the article. If you don;t agree with the numbers that's alright with me. As far as I can tell the only conclusions I came to were that secondhand smoke is not such a good thing for nonsmokers.

When you wrote "personal views" exactly what were you referring to? Secondhand smoke? Thanks for the comment.
