The governor of Alabama Bob Riley had asked for funding from the Bush-Clinton Katrina fund and received $1.6 million in aid. This past month the last marooned shrimp boats was returned more than a year after Katrina hit.
“Twenty-three of the boats left on land were owned by 22 families who did not have insurance” according to press secretary Tara Hutchinson. While this news is great for Alabama shrimp boat owners “there are still hundreds of boats left on the coasts of neighboring Mississippi and Louisiana." I am shocked that there are still boats marooned along the Gulf Coast more than a year after Katrina. Once again our government is showing what their priorities are not and proving this current administration cares little about the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Does this real-life story remind anyone else of the movie "Forrest Gump?" I loved that - the heroes rode out the hurricane in their dumpy shrimping boat, and when all the others were trashed by the storm it would lead to them being the only game left in town. Anyway, movie plots aside, it's shocking to see that the government has no apparent continued interest in repairing the Gulf Coast, but we can spend billions on warfare elsewhere in the world. That said, the 22 families who went without insurance on something as important as their livelihood should have known better.
