Georgia Cuts Unemployment Insurance Tax By $100 Million
The State Labor Commissioner of Georgia, Michael Thurmand, announced a major tax cut beginning in January 2007 in a press release on the Georgia Department of Labor website.  Thurmand will implement a $100 million unemployment insurance tax cut that he says “will leave more money in the hands of Georgia’s large and small employers, which will help protect existing jobs and increase the likelihood that new jobs will be created.”

The press release further said “Georgia has the second most solvent unemployment insurance trust fund and the lowest unemployment insurance tax rates in the Southeast.”  In addition “Georgia has one of the lowest average claims durations in the nation.  For the twelve months ending Aug. 31, 2006, the average duration of Georgia claims was 11.2 weeks, while the national average was 15.2 weeks.”

Looks like other states need to follow the steps Georgia is taking to help get their unemployed citizens back to work as soon as possible.  Three months sounds about right for a motivated person to find work or start a new blogging career.
