There were “27,337 deer-vehicle collisions in 2005, down from 29,874 crashes reported in 2004” translating to an 8.5 percent decrease in collisions across the state. Oddly enough fatalities were slightly up in 2005 with nine compared to 2004 with only five.
The average cost per insurance claim nationally for collision damage is about $2,600 totaling over a billion dollars in vehicle damage annually according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. If you are in a crash caused by a deer it is good to know that “most insurers cover these losses under the ‘other than collision’ (comprehensive) portion of an auto insurance policy, minus the deductible.”
I was amazed to learn that the deer population in Ohio is around 600,000. If you live in Ohio do you have to be on the lookout for deer on a daily basis?
