The first thing to do is to find out if a building permit is necessary. Regardless of what the contractor says about the permit you should find out for yourself. Secondly find out if “the contractor has liability insurance to cover any damage he does to your house.”
The article uses Debbie Hurst of Fairfield, Ohio as an example of what not to do. She hired a contractor without finding out if he had liability insurance. The remodeling work he did on her basement ended up being shoddy work and when rain came water leaked through the windows ruining the carpet and personal items.
Hurst said the contractor told her to call her insurance company because he doesn’t carry insurance. Be careful when remodeling your home and take the important precautionary measures so you are not left high and dry.
