The million-dollar campaign lasts five-months and will consist of “stepped-up use of sobriety checkpoints and nearly 25,000 radio and television spots will run throughout the Commonwealth.” During the remainder of the year “Virginia law enforcement agencies will hold a minimum of one sobriety checkpoint a week across the state.”
Since the inception of the Checkpoint Strikeforce in 2002 DUI-related fatalities have decreased by 14% while DUI-related injuries have decreased by 11%. Even more impressive is the fact that among teens ages 15-19 “alcohol-related traffic fatalities and injuries have decreased by nearly 28-percent and 26-percent, respectively, since 2002.”
The significant alcohol-related traffic fatalities and injury decreases among the teen population is truly great news for the efforts put forth by the state of Virginia. Until the general culture of this country stops making drinking alcohol such a taboo and or evil act we will have to continue to try and prevent teens from drinking and driving.
Whenever you tell a child not to do something and don’t offer explanations, reasons or any type of communication they are going to try that “bad” thing. Like most things in life drinking alcohol in moderation or laying to bed the curiosity about it by allowing your child to take a sip of that wine or beer will do wonders for their future. There will always be a certain amount of teens and adults who will drink and drive but taking away the illicitness of alcohol at an early age will help prevent many people from abusing alcohol which can lead to drinking and driving.
