Senator Makes Noise About Farmers Crop Insurance Plight
According to insurancejournal.com “Colorado Sen. Ken Salazar has asked federal agriculture officials to reconsider their decision to deny drought disaster loans to farmers on the Eastern Plains whose wells were shut off in a water rights dispute.”  Salazar went on to claim “federal officials ordered crop insurance providers to cover losses only on crops irrigated with water that farmers were guaranteed before the planting season.”

Farmers are potentially looking at access to only one well next year “under a plan aimed at settling a dispute with other northern Colorado farmers and Front Range cities.”  Over 400 wells were shut down by the state engineer due to “forecasting of lower-than-average flows in the river.”

For some farmers they could be facing shutting down their farms by the end of the year if they don’t receive more water.  A statement from Shirley A. Pugh, spokesperson for the Risk Management Agency, said”

Irrigated crops are insured based on the amount of water farmers can reasonably expect and the Central Water District supplied the expected water for this crop year.  Crop insurance losses must be seen to be from natural causes to be eligible for indemnity payments.  The cause of loss in these cases was the shutting off of wells, which is not a natural cause of loss.
