Is Your Commute Time On The Decline?
According to an article on the insurancejournal.com the Census Bureau released some data this week stating “the average daily commute to work has shrunk from 25.5 minutes in 2000 to 25.1 minutes last year.”  That’s right folks on average U.S. commuting times have decreased a whopping 48 seconds a day for a grand total of 16 minutes a month.

Depending on where you live your commute could be somewhere between tolerable and agonizing.  Surprisingly Los Angeles commuters are averaging 28.4 minutes, New York was second with 34.2 minutes and number one is Vineland, N.J. coming in at 39.6 minutes.

Looks like jobs are moving to where the people are, in the suburbs, people are telecommuting or working from home on their own business.  Wonder how much blogging has had an affect on these numbers?  Seems like not only are millions of people blogging but at least thousands are actually making a living at it.

Some other interesting numbers from the Census data:

  • The share of people driving alone to work increased from 75.7 percent in 2000 to 77 percent last year.
  • The share of people carpooling to work dropped from 12.2 percent in 2000 to 10.7 percent last year.
  • The share of people using mass transit stayed the same at 4.7 percent.
  • The share of people walking to work dropped from 2.9 percent in 2000 to 2.5 percent last year.
  • The share of people working at home increased from 3.3 percent in 2000 to 3.6 percent last year.

Looks like auto insurance premiums could be on the decline as well if commuting time continues to decrease
