In light of that turning of the tide they have recently started offering “AOL.com e-mail accounts for free, software and other features once reserved for paying subscribers” and now you can add “free identity theft and computer damage insurance coverage” to the mix according to the post-gazette.com. The insurance is being offered through American International Group Inc. The coverage includes the following:
American International Group Inc., pledges up to $10,000 to help restore users' identity and credit regardless of how their Social Security number, bank account or other personal information got compromised. The policy covers costs for refiling rejected loan applications, legal fees, credit reports and up to $2,000 in lost wages. It does not cover any money lost in scams, although financial institutions sometimes absorb those losses. A separate AIG policy covers up to $1,000 to repair or replace computers that suffer physical damage. The replacement cost is limited to the computer's current value, not its purchase price.
The free insurance is only available to $26-a-month unlimited access and $10-a-month broadband plan subscribers. If you are an AOL subscriber check your homeowners policy to see if it covers identity theft as some do offer that coverage. If you do have identity theft coverage through your homeowners’ policy then the AOL insurance will be secondary to the homeowners’ policy.
