Which Is Better: Buying Insurance Directly Or Through An Agent?
I found a very informative article on (YHOO) written by a staff member from the Motley Fool.  If you have ever wondered about whether you should purchase insurance through an agent, the Internet or directly then you should read this article.

The first question I recommend you ask yourself is if you are a do-it yourselfer.  Do you conduct extensive research before buying anything?  Did you find and buy your house without a real estate agent?  If you are that type of person then you probably are online right now at all the insurance portals seeking out quotes and information.  If you like to do a little research or no research but instead want to talk with a knowledgeable professional then sit down with an agent.

The Motley Fool article points out the importance of finding a “good agent” that is not trying to sell you insurance you might not need.  Also they recommend you get referrals from friends or colleagues for insurance agents.

One of the ways to know if you have found a “good agent” is whether or not they are pushy or aggressive and trying to sell you a product the first time they meet you.  If you already know what you want and you are ready to buy then don’t hold it against you for setting you up with a product.  But generally if the agent is trying to push you towards a specific product or just sell you anything versus getting to know you and your whole financial picture you might look for another agent.

Most insurance agents are working on commission, which tends to weed out the short-term agents versus the long-term ones.  Therefore another question you can ask is how long the agent has been in the insurance business.  If they have been in the industry for at least 3-5 years chances are you have a person who is going to make a long career in the insurance industry.

If you are unsure of your choices for a particular type of insurance then work with a trusted professional who will help guide you to make an informed decision.
