Weekly Insurance Scammers Exposed: 11th Installment
There were quite a few frauds and scams going on this week.  I especially noticed the health care fraud by a doctor in Iowa.  He is awaiting sentencing on 82 counts of health care fraud stemming from “fabricating patient notes and submitting inaccurate claims” in order to receive more money.  I suppose he felt his normal compensation did not suffice so he committed fraud for five years.

  • Insurance Fraud and Grand Theft - San Diego insurance agent/broker failed to send clients’ premium funds to insurance companies –victims lost over $150,000.
  • Staged Accidents & Fraudulent Auto Insurance Billing - Three individuals, including a father and daughter have been arrested and face felony charges stemming from staged accidents and $40,000 in fraudulent auto insurance billings according to Tom Gallagher, Florida's chief financial officer. Four others were previously arrested in related cases, and further arrests are anticipated.
  • Workers Comp Fraud - A Jacksonville, Fla. tree service business owner has been arrested after the electrocution of one of his employees and charged with workers' compensation fraud, first degree, for failure to provide workers' compensation insurance, according to Tom Gallagher, Florida CFO. Due to the lack of insurance, it is possible that the family of the deceased worker may not receive death benefits.
  • Health Care Fraud - Dr. Peter Boesen is awaiting sentencing on 82 counts of health care fraud relating to his practices at his ear, throat and nose clinic. Each charge is punishable by up to 10 years in prison. He could also forfeit almost $429,000 that prosecutors allege came from fraudulent activity.
  • Workers Comp Fraud - Husband and wife filed workers’ comp claims with their employers for more than $300,000 & $800,000 respectively – videotaped evidence shows couple doing yard work and other physical activities contrary to the physical limitations they reported to doctors.
  • Unlawfully Cashing Workers Comp Checks - A Suffolk County, New York woman has pleaded guilty to unlawfully cashing checks payable to her deceased mother in a case of workers' compensation insurance fraud, according to the New York State Insurance Fund.
