Typhoon Saomai Batters Southeastern Coast Of China
It seems as if everywhere in the world people are having to face off with Mother Nature.  According to insurancejournal.com Typhoon Saomai that hit Chinas southeastern coast was the most powerful typhoon China has seen in five decades.  The sheer magnitude forced over 1.5 million people to evacuate their homes.

Incredibly, winds reached 135 mph capsizing ships, destroying buildings and killing 83 people.  Typhoon Saomai was the eighth major storm this year.  In case you were wondering Saomai is the Vietnamese word for Venus.

According to the Chinese weather bureau “they forecast unusually heavy typhoon action this summer, saying warmer than normal Pacific currents and weather patterns over Tibet would create bigger storms and draw them farther inland.”

A sad part of this typhoon is that most of the deaths occurred in “areas away from coastal communities that have elaborate dike networks and a long history of evacuating flood-prone areas.”

I wonder how many of the people affected by the storm have insurance on their house?  If anyone is familiar with the Chinese insurance market please let us know.
