Post-Storm Population Count On Way In Parishes Hit By Hurricane Katrina
According to The Times Picayune website www.nola.com a population count is under way in parishes devastated by Hurricane Katrina.  Teams from the private non-profit group Louisiana Public Health Institute are dropping off information gathering packets and conducting personal interviews.

The information being compiled is to help government better understand resident’s needs a year after Katrina.  Funding for this survey project comes from grants from the Centers for Disease Control Foundation and several state health departments.

Erin Bertschy, team leader for the survey project, commented, “What's important to capture is what people are back, what are their health needs, what are their economic indicators, income levels and employment status.”

This is such an important task for the New Orleans and surrounding areas.  I will be interested to find out the difference in population between now and before the hurricanes.  It seems as if a large chink of the population has resettled in other parts of the country.
