The purpose of the database is to help “increase insurers’, employers’ and consumers’ awareness of the health care system.” The database will contain claims information, excluding personal information, “and will offer access to aggregate data only to the participating plans.”
Some of the other projected benefits of the database include, “understanding health care trends, analyzing the effectiveness of specific treatments and technologies, and compare the performance of specific employer-sponsored plans to the performance of comparable plans in the employer’s region or industry.”
The cost for the database is $21.5 million to be developed over a two-year period by Computer Sciences Corp. of El Segundo, CA. That seems a huge chunk of money to develop a database but considering we are talking about 79 million people I suppose the price is reasonable. I just hope no one has to input all those peoples information into the database.
I just wonder after all of this time, cost and effort if that many people will use the database?
