Although I have never suffered from heat-related injuries I can imagine many people exposed either to direct sunlight or working in an extremely hot space having to deal with these types of injuries. The article on the LWCC website is an important one, especially during the summer.
The article lists symptoms and possible treatments for various different heat-related injuries. If you or someone you know works outside or in a very hot environment take a moment to read through this article.
I will list some precautionary measure for employers to avoid hear stress:
- Drink plenty of fluids.
- Reduce or eliminate alcohol and tobacco intake.
- Build up tolerance for warm environments by gradually increasing working time.
- Stay physically fit.
- Dress in light colors if possible.
- Dress in loose clothing if possible.
- Eat low-fat, nutritious foods.
- Get plenty of rest and take breaks.
- Watch co-workers for signs of heat stress.
- Understand that personal protective equipment can increase chances of heat stress.
- Wear gel packs, a cooling vest or use a cool mister if possible.
- Ventilate the workplace whenever possible and/or use fans.
- Work in the morning hours whenever possible.
