Indonesia Makes Efforts To Decrease Tsunami Casualties
As most of you know Indonesia has been battered by tsunamis in the past 18 months, the most recent being on July 17 along Java’s south coast.  A government official said “Indonesia plans to build elevated safety zones in low-lying coastal areas to help reduce tsunami casualties” according to insurancejournal.com.

Burhanuddin, a Culture and Tourism Ministry spokesperson that uses a single name said, “Concrete walls or artificial hills will be created in resort areas on the islands of Bali, Sumatra and Java, and other areas deemed at risk.”

“People will be directed to the safe areas protected by high concrete walls, which will be within 20 minutes of their homes.”  Of course these “safe areas” will prove effective if there is sufficient warning of an impending tsunami.  The Indonesian government says they are “developing a tsunami warning system with monitoring buoys, but the project has been hampered by poor funding and technical difficulties.”
