Early Christmas Present Of $566,000 Restitution For California State Fund
The California State Compensation Insurance Fund received a large chunk of restitution from a Marin County roofing company owner, Kenneth Scott Cooper of San Rafael, convicted of workers compensation fraud according to insurancejournal.com.  It took almost a year for the Fund to receive the money, Cooper pleaded guilty to three felony charges on Nov. 1, 2005.

Cooper was accused of “worker’s compensation insurance premium fraud, furnishing a false payroll deduction statement and filing a false tax return.”  Basically Cooper, a licensed general contractor, paid his employees 50 percent of the time in cash so as to lower his insurance premiums.  Just to save a little money now he is a felon.

The interesting aspect is Cooper’s illegal activities were found out when one of his employees was injured on the job and was filing a worker’s comp claim.  The employee divulged that Cooper’s company had been paying him in cash for half of his wages.

When filing a workers comp claim do you need to tell the insurance company your boss is paying you partly in cash?  If not then this employee must have had it in for Cooper and was looking for a way to take him down.  Regardless Cooper’s activities were going to be found out eventually.
