According to the insurancejournal.com Rev. Al Sharpton spoke at the National Urban League convention last week, “Katrina should be as much a part of the national agenda as international issues like conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, Israel and Lebanon. Do the same thing in the Gulf States you did in New York. The government should also affirm a right to return for displaced New Orleanians.” Rev. Jesse Jackson commented on the opportunity Katrina presents, “The rebuilding presents an opportunity for massive skilled training for the area's residents. Katrina was a metaphor for abandoned urban America. When you have people who are unemployed and unskilled, they have no incentive to rebuild.''
If a Hurricane had hit Malibu, Pacific Palisades, The Hamptons or other wealthy coastal cities would there be more focus on rebuilding those areas from our government? There would be heck to pay if the rebuilding was not swift and efficient. The federal government allocated $68 billion towards the rebuilding effort. The money is not what is important but a show of genuine interest in helping the thousands of people who lost everything along with some leadership. Is that really too much to ask?
