Wild Fires In San Bernardino County Not Insurance Catastrophe
The three raging fires that joined to become one massive blaze in San Bernardino County have burned more than 84,000 acres according to nationalunderwriter.com.  Even though the reach and magnitude of the fire was enormous it is not being considered an insurance catastrophe according to a spokesperson for Insurance Services Office, the parent of Property Claims Services (PCS), which keeps tabs on insured losses.

An insurance catastrophe as defined by PCS is “one which impacts a significant number of policyholders-in the thousands and also has a minimum threshold of a $25 million insured loss.”

Although severe the extent of damage done by the Sawtooth fire; “totally destroyed 50 homes, eight mobile homes, 13 garages, 171 outbuildings, 191 cars and pickup trucks, three recreational vehicles, 27 trailers, two railcars and nine tractors” is not considered a catastrophe.
