I was shocked at the 70 year old man this past week who was charged with wire fraud, health care fraud and the distribution of controlled substances. This guy was a doctor and in his retirement years. I do not know him but am baffled as to why he would committ all of this terrible acts. The steady flow of insurance scams amazes me.
- Soliciting Funds - A New Mexico insurance deputy has been placed on leave amid allegations he solicited charitable donations from a company that faced fines from regulators.
- Drug Fraud - Panama City Florida doctor Thomas G. Merrill was sentenced today for multiple charges of wire fraud, health care fraud and distribution of controlled substances. He was convicted by a jury of prescribing large amounts of controlled drugs to "doctor-shopping" patients, five of whom died from overdoses of the medications. Merrill, 70, was sentenced to life in prison.
- Aggravated Fraud Conspiracy – One Macomb and one Camden Illinois resident are both charged with being an organizer of an aggravated fraud conspiracy, a Class X felony, as well as two counts each of aggravated fraud and insurance fraud and one count each of conspiracy to commit fraud, vendor fraud and mail fraud.
- Restaurant Insurance Fraud - A Portsmouth, N.H. man was fined and given a suspended prison sentence after pleading guilty to trying to defraud his insurance company.
- Insurance Fraud - A 57-year-old man admitted pulling off an insurance scam with his son, a former college student who faces up to 157 years in prison for federal drug and weapons crimes.
