The survey was requested by seven major insurance companies and conducted online from June 12 to June 26 of this year with 4,200 adults living in coastal counties located in hurricane-prone states.
A large discrepancy was found when 65 percent of Southern Coastal Texas residents and 82 percent of Eastern Coastal Texas residents know their homeowners insurance policies don’t cover floods yet only 31 percent of Southern residents and 42 percent of Eastern residents actually have flood insurance.
Dr. Bob Sheets, former director of the National Hurricane Center, presented the poll results at a news conference in Washington saying, “Homeowners along the Gulf Coast, who are more experienced with hurricane damage and preparedness, lead the nation in personal readiness, but the research shows that there are still steps that need to be taken. The forecasters are pretty sure this could be a fierce hurricane season – with a better than average chance of a major hurricane (CAT 3, 4 or 5) hitting the US this year.”
I can’t stress enough the importance of coastal homeowners reviewing their insurance policies and purchasing flood insurance if they do not already own a policy. Remember that a flood insurance policy has a 30-day waiting period before it takes effect. If you procrastinate too long you could be caught unawares when a hurricane does hit your area.
