People In Connecticut Suffering From Depression Fight For Insurance Coverage
In Connecticut there is a battle going on for insurance coverage of people who suffer from severe depression.  This fight stems from lack of access to approved therapy with the FDA according to wtnh.com

Claire Kolff lives with depression and was looking for much needed alleviation from her pain.  Kolff “sought out the latest therapy available Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) but was rejected twice by her insurance company that claimed it was experimental.”

The facts are the FDA approved VNS for depression just last summer.  VNS therapy “implants a pacemaker like device on the chest and stimulates the nerve as you go up the neck actually stimulating a number of different areas in the brain and causing a cascade of chemical changes" according to Dr. Deborah Schroter at St. Raphael Hospital.

Kolff was eventually assisted by a mediator who okayed the VNS therapy.  Kolff now “looks forward to getting up and doing things.  I don’t feel like I’m at the bottom of a deep black hole.”

If you know of anyone who faced similar challenges obtaining this type of treatment then let us know.

Dear Andrew,

Ms. Kolff is not the only individual up against the objections and denials of the insurance carriers for this FDA approved treatment option for TRD (Treatment Resistant Depression).

You and your readers are more than welcome to become informed as to the experiences of others and their challenges but to also learn that there are a reasonable percentage of patients benefiting from this therapy where other treatments have been failures.

We have established a proactive advocacy website and message forum to share information and experiences related to the VNS Therapy™ option.

The site name is: VNSdepression.com

Herb,

Welcome to our site and thanks for the great comment. I really appreciate you taking the time to read this post and leave a comment. I try my best to write on interesting or not so widely disseminated topics. It seems you have taken up a strong crusade for your wife and others battling TRD. I commend you for that and wish you the best in your efforts. I just visited your advocacy website and I will be making another blog post about this topic with your link in the post. Hope you see you back on our site again.

Dear Andrew,

Thank you for your thoughts and well wishes. I am an advocate for education, hope and persistence and all treatment options affording a degree of efficacy for those challenged by horrific mood disorders. It only happens that I’ve made an extra concerted effort to share information relating to the VNS Therapy because after many, many years of searching we’ve finally found a therapy not only yielding efficacy but long periods of remission for my spouse.

You and/or your readership might be interested in my advocacy and letter to First Coast which is carrier for both Florida and Connecticut Medicare and Medicaid which I’d like to share. As you are aware patients are encountering significant resistance from the health insurance carriers.

It is folks like you taking the time and effort in sharing what you've read and learned and then putting the word out to hopefully encourage the thought processes to kick in for others to become better educated.

Thanks for you’re sharing and your dissemination of potentially worthwhile information for others.

It is very much appreciated, at least by me.

Warmly,
Herb
