This insurance covered injuries and other forms of personal accidents that may arise in the course of the tournament. Also the company donated 50 million cedis ($5461) to support the team’s preparations for the tournament.
In light of what Ghana accomplished in the tournament, even though they beat the U.S., I guess that $5461 really helped them prepare properly. While I know some of their players have big contracts in other countries the fact that $5461 is even being donated to a national soccer team speaks to the huge discrepancies in the financial backing of the World Cup teams.
If the U.S., England or Spain were to receive that amount from a corporate sponsor that company would not hear the end of it. That is one of the great things about the World Cup a berth is based on merit instead of money.
