This year the World Cup will bring hundreds of thousands of fans representing the 32 tournament teams to 12 different stadiums. Planning “years in advance will help to minimize the chances of disruption at the tournament” according to Aon United Kingdom CEO Dennis Mahoney.
Some of the specific risks included in the report were:
- Soft, peripheral targets such as hotels and transport networks may face more risk of terrorist attacks than stadium venues, which will be protected by some of the tightest security measures ever devised.
- Businesses supporting the tournament can face a host of risks when sponsoring players, and in a passion-fueled tournament like the World Cup events on and off the field could occur which might lead to embarrassment by association.
So far there have been no major incidents that I have heard about. I will be writing about issues related to the World Cup so I hope there are some fans out there. It has been a great Cup so far with plenty of drama, surprises and incredible goals. Let's hope the US team can play any better this Saturday!
