Revised Asbestos Bill Introduced By Sen. Arlen Specter
Sen. Arlen Specter introduced a revised asbestos bill for “limiting asbestos injury litigation by creating a special $140 billion fund for claimants, nearly a third of it financed by insurers,” according to nationalunderwriter.com.  This version replaces previous legislation from earlier this year that “hit opposition.”

This legislation “creates a $140 billion trust fund that will fund an alternative claims handling process administered through a new unit of the Department of Labor.”  The majority of the $46 billion being funded by insurers will be contributed in the “first five years the fund is in existence.”

Some of the changes to the revised version include “strengthening medical criteria for awards, improving the process for contributions by both well-insured and by financially strapped defendant companies.”

Last week, on a looooong drive from Maine to Oregon, I drove through the Kansas hometown of Senator Arlen Specter... and discovered that it is also the hometown of retired Senator Bob Dole! Which leads to a question about what, exactly, was in the water in that part of Kansas in the early part of the last century, I guess. It wasn't a big town. Also, I'm glad to see that Senator Specter is able to deal with insurance issues in addition to his continuing efforts to police the National Football League and meet that dreamy Tom Brady.
