NY Insurance Superintendent Uses TV Format To Warn Consumers About Fake Insurance
The New York superintendent of insurance Howard Mills is using the TV airwaves to distribute his message about fake insurance according to nationalunderwriter.com.  Mills was propelled to compile the educational video in light of a probe into a phony insurance operation that was exposed because of a fatal accident.

The video consists of Miller telling consumers how to protect themselves from falling prey to fake insurance companies.  Some of the warning signs include:

  • Policies costing far less than what other insurers are charging.
  • Evasiveness on an agent’s part when asked about licensing.
  • A demand for cash-only premium payments.
  • Sales pitches based on a “one-time offer” or “last chance for special savings.”

The accident involved the Ethan Allen tour boat that capsized on Oct. 2 of last year in Lake George killing 20 people.  The tour boat operator had unwittingly purchased bogus insurance from United Re Insurance Ltd. brokerage and Global Property Owners Association Inc.

The companies turned out to be shell companies with a “cyber office, which rents out a telephone number and receptionist.  This is an elaborate scam that undoubtedly has victimized numerous other businesses and people.
