Newcastle Star Michael Owen Injured In World Cup Game, Insurance “Row” Ensues
If you have been following this year’s World Cup you probably are aware of the serious injury to Michael Owen of the English national team in a first round game versus Sweden.  When you are dealing with a 26 year old player who recently signed a record $31.4 million contract with the club Newcastle United you might understand his teams worry about paying his salary.   You can find the article on Fox Sports.

Owen ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament and might take up to 8 months to recover.  The Newcastle chairman was not happy “over media reports that the English Football Association (FA) took out extra insurance cover for Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney as he recovered from a broken foot.”

The FA denies it took out any extra insurance but instead has one policy covering all of the national players.  This policy “compensates clubs for both permanent and temporary injuries sustained by players while on international duty with England."

Conveniently, the FA is not yet saying how much of Owens $190,000 weekly salary it will pay.

In all this responsibility shifting FIFA president Sepp Blatter said that FIFA “will consider special compensation for Owen at the end of the tournament.
