New York Claims Increase Significantly
Between 1995 and 2005 legal claims have more than doubled to $575 million in New York City according to insurancejournal.com.  The cost for legal claims in 1995 was $265 million.

New York City settled some of the following complaints; personal injury, property damage and civil rights among others.  The majority of the claims came from personal injury, around 90%.  These personal injury claims were compromised of mainly medical malpractice, sidewalk trips and falls, motor vehicle accidents and police actions.

The cost of settling lawsuits also increased at “an average annual rate of nine percent nearly twice the rate of all other city spending.”  The estimated rise in legal claims will reach $800 million by 2010.
