Mandatory Evacuation Plans Now Required in Oklahoma
The Governor of Oklahoma Brad Henry recently signed into law that all cities and towns in the state must develop emergency evacuation plans reported the insurancejournal.com. Senator Kenneth Corn introduced this Senate bill in preparation of a potential large-scale disaster on the scale of Hurricane Katrina.

Senator Corn stated:

We all saw what happened following Hurricane Katrina. Many of those who died would probably still be alive if there had been better emergency planning before the disaster hit.  The purpose of this legislation is to help prevent our communities from repeating those fatal mistakes. By requiring all incorporated jurisdictions to fully develop emergency evacuation plans, we'll have better communication and coordination, and that's going to save lives.

This new law will take effect on November 1, 2006.  This law seems to a no brainer from my perspective.  I am shocked that most states do not require detailed plans for evacuation of their cities.  Especially those states consistently affected by natural disasters.
