Legislation Introduced For Front Page Disclosure On Insurance Policies
Legislation has been introduced to help consumers better understand what is not covered under their insurance policy according to nationalunderwriter.com.  The legislation called "Honesty is the Best Insurance Policy Act" seeks full disclosure on the first page of insurance policies of everything not covered under that policy.  This bill was introduced by Senator Trent Lott and Mark Dayton and was met with much opposition.

Lott is pushing this legislation because of the extensive damage done to his Pascagoula Mississippi home by Hurricane Katrina and the consequent suit filed against his insurer, State Farm.  The opposition from insurance trade groups consisted of pointing out the federal government should not attempt to get in the way of state authority.

Lott will face ongoing opposition if he continues with this legislation considering the long history of each state controlling their insurance departments rules and regulations.  I can understand his personal experience with the destruction of his home and the current legal battles with State Farm but he faces a losing battle to try and change insurance rules at the federal level.

More disclosure for consumers is a positive step to help educate and prevent future disastrous fallouts like the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
