A FIFA press spokesman Andreas Herren said, “Like every part of the tournament, the insurance for the trophy is important and it is covered. However the cost of the trophy is really immeasurable.”
The trophy has actually been stolen twice, once in Brazil and once in England where it was retrieved by a dog with the now famous name, Pickles. Even if you are the triumphant winner of the World Cup you do not get to take the trophy home, it stays with FIFA but the ganadores do receive a gold-plated replica to keep.
The insurance coverage for the trophy is not a simple calculation according to Daniel Smith, director with broker Aon’s Specie and Fine Art Division, “While the cost of a replacement for the trophy can be insured, an additional sum may be insured that is offered as a reward for its safe return and the conviction of those who had taken it.”
Regardless of the actual value of the trophy the act of winning the World Cup and hoisting the trophy above your head for your country and all to see is priceless.
