California Health Interview Survey On Chronic Conditions Of Californians
The California Healthcare Foundation (CHCF) funded report of the 2003 California Health Interview Survey “provides information to help counties and local health systems identify areas with high rates of chronic conditions and assist them in meeting the needs of chronically ill patients.”

Some of these chronic conditions include heart disease, hypertension, diabetes and asthma.  Other factors are studied including “prevalence rates, Medi-Cal enrollment, ethnicity and income status.”

Some of the findings include:

  • More than six million adults age 18 or older (23.5 percent) reported being diagnosed with hypertension.
  • Nearly half of the 1.7 million California adults reporting a diagnosis of heart disease are age 65 or older.
  • Nearly 40 percent of adults reporting "fair" or "poor" health status visited the doctor six or more times compared to 14.6 percent of adults in better health.
  • Sixty percent of the adults reporting "fair" or "poor" health status were low income.

The full report is available in PDF format on the CHCF website.
