90’s Oklahoma Law Causes Unintentional Results
An Oklahoma law from the 1990’s intended to “catch uninsured motorists instead has caused mostly innocent Oklahomans to have their drivers' licenses suspended - and in many cases, they don't even know it's happened” as reported in insurancejournal.com

The percentage of uninsured motorists in Oklahoma hovers around 25-30% motivating the passing of the 90’s law that “required insurance companies to notify the state Department of Public Safety whenever a customer cancels an insurance policy within 180 days of it being issued.”   Followed by this notification was “a notice stating that the person's driver's license would be suspended within 30 days unless proof of insurance is provided.”

This law ended up entrapping people who canceled their insurance for legitimate reasons instead of catching people who drop their insurance for illegal reasons.  A new law was signed by Governor Brad Henry requiring the Department of Public Safety to implement an online vehicle insurance verification system by July 1, 2008.”
