The Ten Most Costly World Insurance Losses between 1970-2005
I don’t know about you but I am a sucker for statistics no matter the topic.  There is something about being able to look at a solid number that gives me a good feeling.  With that in mind I turn to a tragic yet interesting bunch of stats representing the ten most costly world insurance losses between 1970 and 2005

Not surprisingly Hurricane Katrina tops the list with the first 8 catastrophes occurring in the US.  I was amazed by that stat but yet not too surprised considering how insured we are as a nation.  Despite the $45 billion of insured loss in Katrina it still was not enough to help every family.

Another interesting stat is the fact that all of the losses in the US were hurricanes excluding 9/11 and the Northridge earthquake.  I don’t think I will be moving to the gulf coast any time soon.  I lived through the October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and was surprised to not see it on the list as well as the OCtober 20, 1991 Oakland fires I also lived through.  My mother’s house was in the path of the fire but miraculously the winds died down and the house was spared.

Mother nature certainly puts us in our place when she wants to.
