The Insidious Disease Alzheimer's Steady Rise
If you are not familiar with Alzheimer’s disease chances are your familiarity will increase according to current statistics.  “U.S. cases have increased to 5 million from 4.5 million in the past 5 years,” according to David Shenk, author of “The Forgetting. Alzheimer’s: Portrait of an Epidemic.”  This unfortunate increase appears to be the norm as boomers approach 65 with estimates ranging as high as “15 million effected people by 2011.”

The majority of people, according to a study done by MetLife, have either never heard of Alzheimer’s or know little about this devastating disease.  That statistic of course directly bears on peoples preparedness for the long-term care of a loved one touched by this disease.

Long Term Care insurance (LTC) is the proper insurance for this type of disease.  The purpose of LTC is to provide money to pay for care for those that can no longer take care of themselves.  The insurance is triggered by either physical ailment or mental impairment, such as Alzheimer’s disease.  Having a family member of my own with this disease I know the devastating effect it can have on the person afflicted as well as those caring for the person.
